How it all got started...

 

 

I felt all the pain of not living my genius:
How I went from below flat broke and depressed to happy and wealthy.

 

One grey November morning in 1993 my banker called and asked for an immediate meeting. Two hours later I sat in front of him and he confronted me with a very unpleasant fact:

 

“There is only one thing in financial life that is worse than being broke — that is ignoring that you are broke.”

 

So much for a reality check!

 

Wait, I need to back up just a little bit. At that time I was living in Germany and I had been a very successful teacher for 17 years, but I wasn’t happy, so I chose to leave that job. I chose to go out on a limb and try a new profession; being a personal coach and consultant, which pays very little, especially when you’re first getting started.

 

Unfortunately, my wife did not want to go with me into this financial insecurity and filed for divorce. My children were deeply confused and sad. None of my friends and family understood why I had quit this well-paying job and told me I was a terrible father because I could not put food on the table for my family any longer. I felt like a complete failure.

 

What had brought me to that place?

 

Before, I had a beautiful wife and 3 wonderful children. I had a job that paid close to a 6 figure-income. I had 8 weeks of paid vacation and great benefits. I lived in a beautiful house and drove a big red Audi 100. And on top of that, I was healthy.

 

So why did I choose to leave it all?

 

Even though I seemingly had everything, I didn’t. I had never felt truly happy. I had done what my parents and society had told me but it never really meant much to me. I certainly wasn’t fulfilled, and I knew something had to change.  Even though I didn’t know it at that time, the plan that was laid out for me by society was a straight jacket.

 

When I quit being a school teacher and started my coaching business, I figured, “Now I’m doing what I love, I will finally be happy.” Not quite, for some reason it only brought me more despair.

 

What went wrong?

 

My new business didn’t pick up as fast as I had wished for because life, so far, had not prepared me to be a business owner and certainly not to tap into my own brilliance. Life had only taught me how to follow the norm and not how to be the truly unique and talented person I am. Even though I had left the rigid German school system I still had on the straight jacket.

 

So, I had all these ideas and enthusiasm in my new business but nothing clicked with the market. And the truth was, I had completely walked away from everything I was familiar with: The school system, the kids and parents that I knew so well. I thought everything needed to be new: I wanted to be a business owner instead of an employee, I wanted to work with corporations instead of kids and parents and I wanted to teach something new, not the boring routine I had been teaching at school. I thought I could only be happy if everything was new.

 

Boy, was I wrong.

 

 

How did I turn it all around?

 

 

 

Things only turned around when I met a new group of friends. My genius friends, if you will.

 

I stopped listening to my old friends and started to listen to my new 'genius' friends. These people didn’t tell me over and over again how I had failed but they told me very specifically what strengths they saw in me. And it opened my eyes.  I started to re-connect to my genius.

 

I didn’t have to throw away everything I had done so far. In fact, I had lived a lot of my strengths right there in the school system where I had been so unhappy. I had spotted the exceptional talents in many students and I had supported them to pursue these talents far beyond what the school system would offer normally. I had been voted best teacher several times over the years and I had loved doing this. So instead of going to corporations who I had no clue about, why not stay with the students and their parents who I knew so well and who’s exceptional talents I always was able to see but could only support so little in class? Why not offer coaching services to these students and their parents? I knew exactly what their frustrations were and how I could help them.

 

Things started to click. And it was easy. My genius started to be at work.

What I wasn’t able to do as a school teacher, I was now able to do as a private consultant and coach.

 

One of my new genius friends was my current business partner Susanna Lange. She supported me in building my own business and she diligently made sure that I never lost sight of my genius. She herself seemed to have so many talents similar to mine that I invited her to join my coaching business only 6 months later. I was much happier and finally life made sense. I enjoyed waking up every day and have done so ever since.

5 Ways to Start Living Your
Natural Genius Today

 

I know that you still may not be convinced that you have a genius hiding inside of you. That’s why I want to give you these 5 tips to help you discover what your natural genius is. Here they are...

 

 

Tip #1:

 

Follow the Number 1 Clue for Genius: You Do it Easily!

 

Have you ever met a person who didn't think much of themselves even though they were brilliant?

 

It's sad, isn't it? Especially if you care for that person.

 

Could it be that the same is true for you, too? At least in one area?

 

The reason why most people miss their brilliance is because it’s in an area that is so easy for them that they take it for granted and don’t think anything special of it. They would never call this ability a ‘genius trait’ because it comes so natural to them. They have a hard time accepting acknowledgement and they usually can’t understand why others have a much harder time doing the same thing. Did you ever experience any of this? Does the light bulb come on yet? If not, read on…

 

Start paying attention to what you do easily. Make a real big deal of it. Tell other’s how proud you are of being able to do it. Look at the things that your friends and colleagues admire in you and really take in their acknowledgement. If you have a hard time with either of these, be assured that means you are on the right track to finding your first genius abilities!

Tip #2:

 

Stop Believing What You Were Told When Growing Up.

 

My partner Susanna Lange struggled through school. She never completed any grade better than with an average of D+. Therefore she believed that she wasn’t very smart and she selected her jobs and career accordingly. Until one day she was thrown into a very challenging situation. She excelled, demonstrated that she could do it perfectly and she experienced more fun than ever before.

 

What had been missing in her life until then had been a big enough challenge. She wasn’t too ‘stupid’ for school, she was too ‘smart’. Her brain actually couldn’t process the slow step by step teaching process. When sitting in exams her thoughts were spinning and her thinking was far too complicated so she missed most of her answers.

 

Where is it that you are in your own way because you are thinking to complicated?

 

Guess what, if Susanna can put her ‘smarts’ to work you can to.

 

Start by looking for bigger challenges. Even if you can’t proof that you can do them look for them and find out. Genius needs to be challenged to show itself. The more you challenge yourself the more you will find out which ones of the challenges you can master easily and which ones you can’t.  With each challenge you will find out more about your genius.

 

And remember: Mistakes are part of being genius. You weren’t able to learn your mother language without making mistakes. When you put test your genius now you will make many mistakes again. Enjoy! Treat it like a huge playground.

  

 

 

 

Tip #3:

 

Stop Comparing Your Weaknesses to Other People’s Strengths.

 

You might be like I was for a long time. When starting something new, I made the mistake over and over again comparing myself to the most accomplished people in that profession or business. When I did that I usually felt small and very un-accomplished.

 

Over and over again life has taught me the lesson that comparing myself to someone else like that never works. It always sets me back. But here is what works like a charm: Focusing on how I can contribute to others with my unique accomplishments, life insights, talents and strengths.

 

For example: When I started my own coaching practice in Germany, I first compared myself to the big corporate coaches and wanted to be like them, but as you know, I failed.

 

I only started to be successful when I looked closer into my unique accomplishments and who could benefit from them. This is when I decided to work as a coach for children and their parents. I used my 17 years of teaching experience and my ability to bring out their exceptional talents. My business took off in a very short time because I was able to help where there had been a huge need: Helping smart kids overcome their struggle at school

 

This could be true for you, too! Your particular set of talents could be the answer for a huge need that no-one else sees but you. This is because you use your own unique perspective based on your distinctive life insights, experiences and talents.

 

So stop comparing yourself to successful people—they do what they do best—and you will never be able to be like them. Your genius will never look like someone else’s. It will always only be yours. This is the beauty of it: You will never have real competition, only genius partners who encourage and inspire you.

 

 

 

Tip #4:

 

A Bigger Challenge is Better than a Small One.

 

In tip #2 I mentioned how my partner Susanna needed a bigger challenge to find her way out of struggle. In Susanna’s example, school caused her thoughts to go in wild loops without being productive. While she thought she was a slow learner, she actually was a fast learner. The only problem was: school was too slow and boring.

 

Now let me ask you this: Where exactly is your current environment too slow and boring? Where do you need a bigger challenge so that your genius can finally come out? Genius only shows itself when required. You will never find it in boring situations.

 

People usually feel bored when they play too small and they have a hard time focusing. Remember at school, when you were bored you preferred daydreaming to listening to your teacher.

 

Look at the following clues. They will help you identify the areas you are playing too small in right now:

 

-         You are bored

-         You find yourself daydreaming

-         You wish you could be somewhere else

-         You dread doing it

 

Look at all these areas and don’t wait any longer to find a bigger challenge. Remember, your genius is waiting.

 

 

 

Tip #5:

 

Give Yourself Permission!

 

We see the same thing happening over and over again when talking to our clients.

 

We always ask them: “Tell me about an extraordinary accomplishment you never thought you could do.”

 

Most of the time the answer goes like this: “Person A asked me to do XYZ. I hesitated to say yes, because it looked like too big of a challenge and I had no experience in it. But they urged me and I finally said yes. Then, when doing XYZ, I was surprised to find that I could do it easily. I even performed better than a lot of people who were doing the same thing for a long time. And what amazed me most: I even enjoyed it.”

 

We always congratulate them for their big accomplishment and they smile and remember how proud they felt.

 

Then we ask: “So now that you know doing XYZ was such a success and you also enjoy it, where do you want to do more of it?”

 

Unfortunately, often it is painful to listen to their immediate first reaction: “No, I would never go for doing it myself. I have so little experience. I would consider it if someone would ask me again.”

 

The response changes eventually, for some quicker than for others, but when our clients finally give themselves permission to go all out their genius life begins unveiling. They see everything they want come true and it seems to be natural: “Everything is clicking.”

 

So let me ask you this:

 

-         Where have you proven your exceptional talents and not pursued them?

-         What is holding you back?

-         Is it because of a past experience?

-         Is it time to allow yourself to move on?
